Our Role Models are Machines

Review by Wetworks E-Zine

Cyanotic are a new duo coming out of Indiana. "Mutual Bonding Through Violation" (the debut release for Cyanotic) is an 8-track exercise in brutal electronic-metal that is reminiscent of all those American bands in the mid-90s. Think 16volt, Bile, Ministry, Clay People or Vein Cage and you will have a good idea of what to expect.

Much of the EP is made up of your typical distorted vocals, angry beats (which sometimes move into breakbeat territory) and cut-throat guitar riffs. Brutal tracks like "Order Out Of Chaos," "Suspension Of Disbelief," and "Deface" all have a lot of energy and aggression. Although, the mix of "Deface" at the end of the CD had me cringing. Happy rave shit does NOT belong on this CD. With that said, "Higher States Of Consciousness" was a lovely break from all the aggression, with it's slower tempo and nice atmospheric synths.

While not really breaking any new ground, Cyanotic does get some points for trying to revive a genre thats on its last leg. Cyanotic's production and programming are top notch and I see this band gaining a lot of exposure in the future (especially since they have been touring with the likes of Bile and Andrew WK). I feel more variation is needed to really get things going though. Either way, if you enjoy Coldwave then you really can't go wrong with Cyanotic, they pretty much nailed the aggressive sound of the 90s perfectly.
